Apple and Samsung take different design philosophies to their flagship phones, but both aim for the same thing: the best phone experience money can buy. Here's how the iPhone 17 Pro Max and Galaxy S25 Ultra compare across the categories that matter most.

Display

The Galaxy S25 Ultra uses a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 3120 x 1440 resolution and 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. Samsung's display technology has been the benchmark for years, and the S25 Ultra continues that standard with peak brightness that makes outdoor visibility excellent.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max uses a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR (OLED) display with ProMotion (also 120Hz adaptive). Apple's color accuracy and HDR performance are among the best in the industry. The Dynamic Island at the top of the screen provides contextual information without interrupting your content.

Both displays are excellent. Samsung edges ahead in raw brightness and resolution. Apple edges ahead in color accuracy and HDR tone mapping. In everyday use, most people won't notice a meaningful difference.

Camera System

The S25 Ultra carries a 200MP main sensor, 50MP 5x telephoto, 10MP 3x telephoto, and 12MP ultrawide. Samsung's processing leans toward vivid, punchy colors with aggressive sharpening. The 200MP sensor captures enormous detail that you can crop into significantly.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max uses a 48MP main sensor, 48MP ultrawide, and a 5x telephoto (12MP). Apple's processing focuses on natural color reproduction and computational photography that blends multiple exposures. The Photonic Engine processes images at the sensor level for better low-light performance.

Samsung wins on zoom range and raw megapixel count. Apple wins on consistency, natural skin tones, and video quality (especially ProRes and Cinematic mode). For social media photos in good lighting, both deliver excellent results. For serious photography, your preference between Samsung's detail-forward approach and Apple's natural processing will determine which you prefer.

Performance

The iPhone 17 Pro Max runs Apple's A19 Pro chip, which leads in single-core performance and power efficiency. iOS optimization means the phone runs smoothly with less RAM than Android flagships require.

The S25 Ultra uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite (or Samsung's Exynos 2500 in some markets), which competes closely in multi-core tasks and GPU performance. Samsung offers 12GB of RAM, which helps with multitasking and keeping apps loaded in memory.

For everyday use (browsing, apps, social media, streaming), both phones are more than fast enough. You'll only notice the performance difference in heavy tasks like video editing, 3D rendering, or sustained gaming sessions where Apple's thermal management tends to throttle less.

Battery Life

Both phones pack large batteries (5000mAh+ range) and deliver full-day battery life under normal use. Samsung offers faster wired charging speeds and supports wireless charging. Apple also supports fast charging and MagSafe wireless charging, though at slightly lower wattage than Samsung's wired speeds.

Real-world battery life depends heavily on usage patterns, screen brightness, and network conditions. In most independent tests, the two phones land within 30 to 60 minutes of each other in total screen-on time.

Software and Ecosystem

This is where the decision often gets made. If you already own a Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, or AirPods, the iPhone integrates with all of them through AirDrop, Handoff, iMessage, and Universal Clipboard. The Apple ecosystem is the strongest argument for choosing iPhone.

If you prefer customization, Samsung's One UI on Android gives you more control over your home screen, default apps, file management, and sideloading. Samsung's ecosystem (Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Tab) is also tightly integrated, though not as locked-in as Apple's.

Durability

The S25 Ultra uses a titanium frame and Corning Gorilla Armor 2, which Samsung claims offers improved scratch and drop resistance. The iPhone 17 Pro Max also uses a titanium frame with Ceramic Shield front glass.

Both phones are IP68 water resistant. In practice, both are fragile when dropped on hard surfaces. Titanium frames resist dents but the glass panels on both phones will crack from a bad fall.
