How Long Does It Take to Repair a Phone Screen?

The Short Answer: 20 to 45 Minutes for Most Phones

A standard screen replacement on a modern smartphone takes 20 to 45 minutes at a repair shop that does this regularly. You can usually wait for it rather than leaving the phone overnight.

That said, not every screen repair is the same. Several factors affect how long yours will take.

What Affects Repair Time

Phone Model

iPhones generally have the most standardized repair process. An iPhone 12, 13, 14, or 15 screen replacement follows a well-documented disassembly sequence that experienced technicians can complete in 20 to 30 minutes.

Samsung Galaxy phones vary more by model. The S series and Note series use curved AMOLED displays with adhesive that requires careful heat application to separate from the frame. These typically take 30 to 45 minutes.

Google Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, and other Android brands each have their own internal layout. Repair time depends on how accessible the display assembly is and whether the phone uses clip-in or adhesive-bonded construction.

Screen Type: LCD vs OLED

LCD screens are generally simpler to replace because the glass and display layers are separate in some designs. OLED screens are thinner and bonded as a single unit, which makes the replacement more delicate. Both take a similar amount of time in a shop, but OLED parts cost more. Our guide on LCD vs OLED screens explains the differences in detail.

Extent of Damage

A cracked screen with working touch and display is the fastest repair: remove the old screen, transfer components (earpiece, sensors, home button where applicable), install the new screen, test, done.

If the phone also has frame damage (bent housing from a hard drop), the frame may need to be straightened or replaced before the new screen can sit properly. This adds 15 to 30 minutes.

If there's internal damage discovered during the repair (loose connectors, water residue, damaged flex cables), the technician will need to address those before closing up the phone.

Part Availability

Shops that stock parts for common models (iPhones, Samsung Galaxy S series) can do the repair on the spot. If your phone is a less common model or a very new release, the part may need to be ordered, which could mean a 1 to 3 day wait.

What to Expect During the Wait

Most shops will ask you to disable Find My iPhone (or the equivalent for Android) before starting. You'll be asked for your passcode so the technician can test touch response and display function after the repair. If you prefer not to share your passcode, let the shop know and they can walk you through the post-repair testing yourself.
