How Much Does It Cost to Repair a Phone Screen?

What Determines Screen Repair Cost

Screen repair pricing isn't one-size-fits-all. The amount you'll pay depends on three things: your phone model, the type of screen technology, and whether genuine or aftermarket parts are used. Understanding these factors helps you evaluate whether a quote is fair before committing.

Factor 1: Phone Model

Newer and higher-end phones cost more to repair because their screens are more expensive to manufacture. A current-generation flagship screen (iPhone 15 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, Google Pixel 9 Pro) costs significantly more to replace than a budget or mid-range phone from a couple of years ago.

Within the same brand, the hierarchy is predictable. Pro and Pro Max (or Ultra) models cost more than standard models. Larger screens cost more than smaller ones. Current-year models cost more than previous-year models because parts are newer and supply is tighter.

Factor 2: Screen Type (LCD vs OLED)

This is the single biggest cost driver. OLED and AMOLED screens produce better contrast, deeper blacks, and thinner designs, but they cost substantially more to produce. LCD screens are cheaper to manufacture and cheaper to replace.

Most current flagships use OLED. Most budget and mid-range phones still use LCD. If you're not sure which type your phone has, our LCD vs OLED comparison explains how to tell.

Factor 3: Genuine vs Aftermarket Parts

This is where the biggest quality and price gap exists. Genuine (OEM) screens maintain all original features: True Tone on iPhones, accurate color calibration, proper touch response, and longer lifespan. Aftermarket screens are significantly cheaper but come with tradeoffs: color inaccuracy, potential touch lag, no True Tone support, and shorter lifespan.

Some shops advertise low prices but use aftermarket parts without disclosing it. Others use aftermarket parts openly and price accordingly. The key is knowing what you're getting before you agree to the repair. Our guide on how to check if your iPhone parts are genuine shows you how to verify after the fact.

Additional Factors That Affect Cost

Frame Damage

If the phone's frame is bent from a hard drop, the new screen won't sit properly unless the frame is straightened or replaced first. This adds to the repair cost because it's extra work and sometimes an extra part.

Curved vs Flat Screens

Samsung's curved-edge displays (Galaxy S series, Note series) are more expensive to replace than flat screens because the display and frame are bonded together. In many cases, both are replaced as a single assembly.

Foldable Screens

Foldable phones (Galaxy Z Flip, Z Fold) have the most expensive screen replacements due to the complexity of the flexible display technology. The outer cover screen is much cheaper to replace than the inner foldable display. More detail in our foldable phone repair guide.

How to Evaluate a Fair Quote

When comparing quotes between shops, ask these questions: What part are you using (genuine, OEM-grade, or aftermarket)? Is the quoted price final, or an estimate that could increase? What warranty do you offer on the repair? How long will the repair take?

A significantly cheaper quote usually means cheaper parts. That's not always bad (aftermarket is fine for older phones you'll replace soon), but you should know what you're getting. A shop that won't tell you what parts they use is a red flag. More on this in our repair scam avoidance guide.

Is Screen Repair Worth It vs Buying a New Phone?

The general rule: if the repair cost is less than half the phone's current working value, repair makes financial sense. A phone that's 1 to 3 years old almost always falls into this category. A phone that's 4 to 5 years old with multiple issues may not.
